Some residents from Cedritos and I went to a Poetry night in Chino Hills (5540 chaeffer ave. chino ca). This poetry night is called "Lion Like Mind State" and occurs every first and third Wednesday of the month. The setting is a spoken word poetry lounge.

While doing rounds one night with Jordan Budisantoso, we established that many residents enjoy poetry after having an impromptu rap battle with them.

Program Description
Jordan Budisantoso introduced me to this poetry lounge and we decided to get residents involved and make it a program. All who attended enjoyed the spoken word. The poets spoke about a wide variety of thought provoking issues such as social movements, political change, homophobia, stereotypes, etc. As far as resources for the program, residents paid $4 as a cover charge. However, in the future, I hope organizations such as IHC could fully sponsor the program to make it even more accessible to residents. In order to recreate this program, give residents a brief intro to what spoken word is all about and give them directions to the poetry lounge. The rest is in the hands of talented poets. It is also a good idea to discuss the issues brought up by the poets with your residents after the program. This venue also hosts Open Mic Nights almost every night of the week so you could also encourage your residents to perform! Don’t forget to have your residents arrange carpools prior to the event.
