Serve and Get Served

The purpose of this program is to educate and expose residents to the many possible ways an individual can serve their community. Residents will be served food and refreshments. A representative from the Center For Community Engagement will then give a brief presentation on the topic of Service Learning. The Resident Advisor will then give examples of service learning projects and tailor them to the passion and interest areas of the attendees. Finally, residents will be given an opportunity to plan their own individualized service learning project/event. A select number of residents will be given the opportunity to present their project idea. All residents will be given resources to help start and implement their project idea. Catering done by In-N-Out burger.

I'll start the program with an activity called “Protect your Balls”. The residents will count off by three’s and all of the number one’s will be given a ping-pong ball. The ball represented whatever meant the most to them. Number’s 2 and 3 will be told that they wanted the balls and could get them by whatever means necessary (without violence). At the end we will have discussions about how it felt to have something taken from you; how it felt to have someone you know pressure you, etc. We will also speak about how the attackers picked out who they would attack, what strategy did they use, and why they chose to (or not to) attack the people that they did.

Many times, mental health is a very taboo topic. Even though, mental health isn't talked about enough, mental illness is something that constantly affects college students around the world. Whether it be depression, anxiety, or chronic stress, mental illness is a real and present issue on college campuses. With this program, I will have a presenter from Counselling Services to talk about the mental health awareness and techniques to deal and cope with a variety of mental health issues.

Unmasking Masculinity: Men's Violence Prevention Conference

This is a conference meant to reach out to male-identified individuals with a focus on deconstructing contemporary masculinity and encourage violence prevention. There will be a keynote speaker, Thomas Keith, who is a professor of Philosophy and Ethnic & Women's Studies at Cal Poly Pomona. He has done a plethora of work on the topic of masculinity. We will also have two other speakers for a break out session and an interactive activity. Lunch will be provided.

Etiquette Dinner

Vagina Monologues

This event is a fundraiser and raises awareness on violence against women. The Vagina Monologues is made up of a varying number of monologues read by a varying number of women. Each of the monologues deals with an aspect of the feminine experience, touching on matters such as sex, love, rape, menstruation, female genital mutilation, masturbation, birth, orgasm, the various common names for the vagina, or simply as a physical aspect of the body. A recurring theme throughout the piece is the vagina as a tool of female empowerment, and the ultimate embodiment of individuality.
